    Frequently asked questions

    What is URL encoding?▾

URL (percent) encoding replaces characters that are not allowed in a URL with % followed by two hex digits of their UTF-8 bytes. A space becomes %20, é becomes %C3%A9 and & becomes %26.

What is the difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent?▾

encodeURI encodes a whole URL but keeps reserved characters like : / ? & = # so the structure still works. encodeURIComponent also encodes those characters, so use it for a single query value or path segment.

    Should a space be %20 or +?▾

Both are common. %20 works everywhere in a URL. + means space only in query strings sent as application/x-www-form-urlencoded (HTML forms). Tick 'Decode + as space' when decoding form data.

Why do I get a malformed URI error when decoding?▾

A % must be followed by two hex digits, and the bytes must form valid UTF-8. A lone % (like 100%) or Latin-1 encoded text such as %E9 cannot be decoded — encode the % as %25 instead.

Is my data sent to a server?▾

No. Encoding and decoding run entirely in your browser with JavaScript, so tokens, URLs and query strings never leave your device.
