Frequently asked questions
What is a hash?▾
A hash function turns any input into a fixed-length fingerprint. The same input always gives the same hash, and changing a single character changes it completely, which makes hashes ideal for checksums and integrity checks.
How do I verify a file's SHA-256 checksum?▾
Click 'Hash a file', choose the downloaded file, and paste the checksum published by the provider into 'Verify a checksum'. If it says Matches, the file is intact and untampered.
Is MD5 secure?▾
No. MD5 and SHA-1 have known collision attacks, so they should not be used for passwords or signatures. They are still fine for detecting accidental corruption. Use SHA-256 or stronger for security.
Can I decrypt a hash?▾
No. Hashes are one-way functions — there is no key to reverse them. So-called MD5 'decrypters' only look up common inputs in precomputed tables.
Are my files uploaded?▾
No. Files are read and hashed inside your browser, so even large or private files never leave your device.
