Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate the average of numbers?▾
Add all the numbers together and divide by how many there are. For 85, 92, 78, 92, 88, 70 and 95 the sum is 600 and there are 7 numbers, so the average (mean) is 600 ÷ 7 ≈ 85.71.
What is the difference between mean, median and mode?▾
The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted (or the mean of the two middle values for an even count). The mode is the value that appears most often. In 70, 78, 85, 88, 92, 92, 95 the mean is about 85.71, the median is 88 and the mode is 92.
How do I calculate a weighted average?▾
Multiply each value by its weight, add those products, then divide by the sum of the weights. For grades of 90 (20%), 82 (30%) and 75 (50%): 90×20 + 82×30 + 75×50 = 8,010, and 8,010 ÷ 100 = 80.1.
What if no number repeats — is there a mode?▾
If every value appears the same number of times there is no mode. If two or more values tie for most frequent, the data has several modes (bimodal or multimodal) and the calculator lists all of them.
When should I use the median instead of the average?▾
Use the median when the data has outliers or is skewed, such as house prices or salaries. One very large value pulls the mean up a lot but barely moves the median, so the median better describes a typical value.
How do you find the range?▾
Subtract the smallest value from the largest. For 70 to 95 the range is 95 − 70 = 25. It is the simplest measure of how spread out the numbers are; for a fuller picture use standard deviation.
