    Frequently asked questions

    What is Chinese age (xusui)?▾

Xusui is the traditional Chinese way of counting age: you are 1 on the day you are born, and everyone gains a year at Lunar New Year instead of on their birthday.

Why is my Chinese age 1 or 2 years older?▾

You start at 1 instead of 0, and you add a year at Lunar New Year. If you were born just before Lunar New Year, you can be 2 years older than your international age for a few weeks.

Which Lunar New Year dates does it use?▾

Dates for 1900-2100 are computed from new moons and solar terms in China Standard Time (UTC+8), the same rule the Chinese calendar uses.

Is Korean age the same as Chinese age?▾

Korean counting age also starts at 1 but adds a year every January 1. Since June 2023 South Korea officially uses international age in law.

Is my birth date sent anywhere?▾

No. Everything is calculated in your browser, and a shared link only contains your ages, never your birthday.
