    Frequently asked questions

Is one dog year really seven human years?▾

No. The 1:7 rule is a myth. Dogs mature very fast: a one-year-old dog is roughly a 15-year-old human and a two-year-old about 24. After that each year adds about 4 to 7 human years depending on size.

How old is my dog in human years?▾

Using the vet chart, a 5-year-old dog is about 36 (45 for giant breeds), a 10-year-old small dog about 56, a medium dog about 60, a large dog about 66 and a giant breed about 79 in human years.

Why do big dogs age faster?▾

Large and giant breeds have shorter lifespans, so after about age five they age faster than small dogs. A 10-year-old Great Dane is much older in human terms than a 10-year-old Chihuahua.

What is the DNA methylation dog age formula?▾

A 2020 study (Wang et al., Cell Systems) compared DNA methylation in Labradors and humans and proposed human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. It suggests dogs age very fast early on — a 1-year-old dog is about 31.

    When is a dog considered a senior?▾

Vets usually call a dog senior in the last quarter of its expected lifespan: around 10–11 for small dogs, 9 for medium, 8 for large and 6–7 for giant breeds.
