How much should I feed my dog per day?▾
Start from the resting energy requirement, 70 × weight in kg^0.75, and multiply by a life-stage factor such as 1.6 for a neutered adult. A 50 lb neutered adult needs about 1,160 kcal, or about 3.3 cups of a 350 kcal/cup food.
How many calories does a puppy need?▾
Puppies under 4 months need about 3 times their resting energy requirement, and puppies from 4 to 12 months about 2 times. Split it into three or four meals.
Where do I find the calories in my dog food?▾
The bag or can lists metabolizable energy as kcal per cup and kcal per kg. Use the cup value with a measuring cup, or the kg value if you weigh the food in grams.
