Frequently asked questions
How are calories burned calculated?▾
With MET values (metabolic equivalents): calories per minute = MET × 3.5 × body weight in kg ÷ 200. Running at 6 mph is 9.8 METs, so a 70 kg person burns about 9.8 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 ≈ 12 kcal per minute, or 360 kcal in 30 minutes.
How many calories does walking burn?▾
Brisk walking (3.5 mph) burns roughly 4–5 kcal per minute for a 70 kg person — about 150 kcal in 30 minutes or 300 per hour. Heavier people and faster or uphill walking burn more.
Do heavier people burn more calories?▾
Yes. Moving more body mass takes more energy, so calories burned rise roughly in proportion to weight. A 90 kg person burns about 30% more than a 70 kg person doing the same activity.
What does MET mean?▾
A MET is the energy you use sitting quietly (about 1 kcal per kg per hour). An activity of 8 METs uses eight times as much energy as resting. Values here come from the Compendium of Physical Activities, the standard research reference.
How accurate are calories burned estimates?▾
They're averages and can be off by 20% or more for an individual, depending on fitness, efficiency, terrain and intensity. Fitness trackers and heart-rate monitors also estimate, with similar error margins.
How much exercise does it take to burn 500 calories?▾
For a 70 kg person, about 40 minutes of running at 6 mph, 50 minutes of moderate cycling (12–14 mph) or around 1 hour 35 minutes of brisk walking.
