How much caffeine is too much?▾
The FDA says up to 400 mg a day is generally safe for healthy adults — about four cups of brewed coffee. During pregnancy the recommended limit is 200 mg a day.
How long does caffeine stay in your body?▾
Caffeine has an average half-life of about 5 hours, so half of it is still in your body 5 hours after drinking. A 200 mg coffee at 3 pm leaves around 66 mg at 11 pm.
How much caffeine is in a cup of coffee?▾
An 8 oz (240 ml) cup of brewed coffee has about 95 mg of caffeine, a shot of espresso about 63 mg, and a cup of black tea about 47 mg. Amounts vary by brand and brewing method.
