Frequently asked questions
How much should I weigh for my height?▾
A healthy BMI of 18.5–24.9 is the most widely used guide. For 168 cm (5 ft 6 in) that's about 52–70 kg (115–155 lb).
What is the Devine formula?▾
Created in 1974 for drug dosing: 50 kg for men (45.5 kg for women) plus 2.3 kg for every inch over 5 feet. It is still used in hospitals as 'ideal body weight' (IBW).
Why do the formulas give different results?▾
Each was fitted to different data: Robinson and Miller (1983) refined Devine's numbers, while Hamwi (1964) came from insurance tables. Their spread shows that ideal weight is a range, not a single number.
Do these formulas work for athletes?▾
Not well. Muscle is dense, so muscular people can weigh more than the formulas suggest while being very healthy. Body fat percentage is a better measure for them.
