    Frequently asked questions

    How do you calculate GPA?▾

    Convert each letter grade to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0), multiply by the course's credit hours, add everything up and divide by the total credits.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?▾

Unweighted GPA uses the plain 4.0 scale for every class. Weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes — commonly +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP, IB or dual-enrollment college courses — so it can go above 4.0.

How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?▾

Multiply your current GPA by the credits you have completed, add this semester's grade points, and divide by total credits. Enter your current GPA and credits in the Cumulative section and the tool does it for you.

What grade points does this calculator use?▾

    The standard US 4.0 scale: A+/A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7, F 0.0. Some schools count A+ as 4.3 — check your school's policy.

    Do credit hours affect GPA?▾

Yes. A 4-credit class counts twice as much as a 2-credit class. For high school, use 1 credit per full-year class if your school does not use credit hours.

    Is a 3.5 GPA good?▾

A 3.5 means you average between an A- and a B+. It is above the US college average of about 3.1 and meets the cutoff for many honors programs and scholarships.
