Frequently asked questions
How do you play Connect Four?▾
Players take turns dropping a disc into one of seven columns of a 6-row grid. The disc falls to the lowest empty space. The first player to get four in a row — horizontally, vertically or diagonally — wins; if the grid fills up first, it's a draw.
How do you win Connect Four every time?▾
You can't win every time against a good opponent, but the first player can force a win with perfect play by starting in the middle column. Practical tips: take the center, build threats that need different columns, and set up two threats at once so your opponent can block only one.
Who goes first in Connect Four?▾
Red traditionally goes first. Going first is a real advantage — Connect Four was solved in 1988, proving the first player wins with perfect play starting in the center column.
What is the best first move in Connect Four?▾
The center column. It's part of the most possible four-in-a-row lines, and it's the only opening that leads to a forced win for the first player with perfect play.
What are odd and even threats?▾
A threat is a spot that would complete your four. As the board fills up, the first player usually wins with threats on odd rows (1, 3, 5 from the bottom) and the second player with threats on even rows, because of who is forced to play underneath them.
How hard is the computer?▾
Easy often plays randomly, Medium looks 4 moves ahead and Hard searches 7 moves ahead with a strategy-aware evaluation — it punishes mistakes and rarely misses a threat.
