How to use Play Chess Online

    1. 1Pick an opponent: the computer at Beginner, Easy, Medium or Hard, or 2 players on the same device, and choose to play White or Black
    2. 2Tap a piece to see its legal moves as dots, then tap a highlighted square to move; pawns reaching the last rank let you choose the promotion piece
    3. 3Use Hint for a suggested move, Undo to take moves back, and Copy PGN to save or analyse the game elsewhere

    Frequently asked questions

Can I play chess against the computer for free?▾

Yes. Choose Beginner, Easy, Medium or Hard and start playing right away — no account or download needed. The computer runs in your browser, so it even works offline once the page has loaded.

Which level should a beginner choose?▾

Start with Beginner, which looks only one move ahead and makes human-like mistakes. Move up to Easy once you win regularly. Medium calculates three moves ahead and punishes loose pieces, and Hard searches much deeper, so it rarely blunders.

How do castling, en passant and promotion work here?▾

All official rules are built in. To castle, tap your king and then the square two steps toward the rook. En passant captures show up as a legal move right after an enemy pawn moves two squares beside yours. When a pawn reaches the last rank you pick a queen, rook, bishop or knight.

    When is a chess game a draw?▾

A game is drawn by stalemate (the player to move has no legal move but isn't in check), threefold repetition of the same position, the 50-move rule (50 moves each without a capture or pawn move), or when neither side has enough material to checkmate, such as king and bishop against king.

Can I play chess with a friend on the same device?▾

Yes. Choose 2 players (same device) and pass the phone or tablet back and forth, or play at a laptop. Use Flip to turn the board around for the other player.

Will I lose my game if I close the page?▾

No. Every move is saved in your browser, so the game is waiting when you come back. You can also press Copy PGN to export the moves in standard notation for analysis in any chess app.
