    Frequently asked questions

    How do you play Minesweeper?▾

Click squares to reveal them. A number tells you how many of the 8 surrounding squares hide mines. Use the numbers to work out where mines are, flag them, and open every square that isn't a mine to win.

What do the numbers mean in Minesweeper?▾

Each number is the count of mines in the up to eight squares around it. A blank square has no mines around it, so its neighbours open automatically.

    How do I flag a mine on a phone?▾

Long-press a square, or turn on Flag mode so every tap places or removes a flag. On a computer, right-click to flag.

    What is chording?▾

When a number already has the right amount of flags around it, click the number to open all its other neighbours at once. If a flag is wrong, you'll hit a mine — so be sure first.

Can I lose on the first click?▾

No. Mines are placed after your first click, never on that square or next to it, so the first click always opens an area to start from.

    What are the board sizes?▾

Beginner is 9×9 with 10 mines, Intermediate 16×16 with 40 mines, and Expert 30×16 with 99 mines — the classic Windows sizes. Your best time for each is saved in this browser.
