    Frequently asked questions

What are the basic rules of checkers?▾

Each player starts with 12 pieces on the dark squares. Pieces move one square diagonally forward. You capture by jumping over an opponent's piece to the empty square behind it. A piece that reaches the far row becomes a king and can move backward too. You win when your opponent has no pieces or no legal moves.

Do you have to jump in checkers?▾

Yes. Under official American and English rules, capturing is compulsory: if any jump is available you must take one. If a piece can keep jumping after landing, it must continue in the same turn. The game highlights the pieces that can capture.

Who goes first in checkers, black or red?▾

In official checkers the darker pieces (Black) move first. Choose Play Black to start, or Play Red to let the computer open.

Can a king jump multiple times?▾

Yes. Kings and ordinary pieces can both make multiple jumps in one turn, and kings can change direction between jumps. If an ordinary piece reaches the king row during a jump, it is crowned and its turn ends there.

How does a checkers game end in a draw?▾

When neither side can force a win, players agree to a draw. This game also declares a draw after 40 moves by each player with no capture, crowning or ordinary piece moving — usually a few kings circling each other.

    Is the Hard level beatable?▾

It looks many moves ahead and never misses a forced capture, so you'll need to think carefully: keep your back row filled as long as you can, control the center, and trade pieces when you're ahead.
