Frequently asked questions
What are color harmonies?▾
Rules based on positions on the color wheel: analogous colors sit next to each other, complementary colors are opposite (180°), triadic colors are 120° apart, split complementary uses the two neighbors of the complement, and monochromatic varies the lightness of one hue.
How does the image palette work?▾
The image is scaled down in your browser and its pixels are grouped with k-means clustering; the five biggest clusters become the palette, ordered from dark to light. The image is never uploaded.
How many colors should a palette have?▾
Most brand and UI palettes use 3–5 colors: one or two main colors, an accent, and neutral light and dark shades. A 60-30-10 split (dominant, secondary, accent) is a popular guideline.
Why do some swatches have white text and others black?▾
Each code is drawn in black or white — whichever has the higher WCAG contrast ratio with that color — so it stays readable.
