    Frequently asked questions

Why does my resolution look lower than my monitor's?▾

Browsers report screen size in CSS pixels. With display scaling (for example 150% on Windows or Retina on Mac) the physical resolution is CSS size × device pixel ratio — shown on the page as physical pixels.

What is the difference between screen size and viewport?▾

Screen size is the whole display. The viewport is the visible area of the browser window, which is smaller because of toolbars, tabs and window size. Web designers usually care about the viewport.

What is device pixel ratio (DPR)?▾

It is the number of physical pixels per CSS pixel. Most laptops and phones have a DPR of 2 or 3, so images need to be 2–3× larger to look sharp.

How do I calculate an aspect ratio?▾

Divide width and height by their greatest common divisor: 1920 × 1080 → 16:9. To keep the same ratio at a new width, new height = new width × height ÷ width.
