    Frequently asked questions

What can I use a random word generator for?▾

Party games like Pictionary, charades and Heads Up, creative writing and journaling prompts, brainstorming names, vocabulary practice, teaching parts of speech, and breaking writer's block. Pick nouns for things to draw and verbs for things to act out.

Are the words suitable for kids?▾

The common word lists are hand-picked everyday words — animals, food, objects, actions and describing words — and are family friendly. The Whole dictionary option includes rare and technical words, so use the common lists for children.

Can I get random words that start with a certain letter?▾

Yes. Type one or more letters in Starts with — for example “b” for words beginning with B, or “str” for words like strawberry and stretch. Combine it with the length filters for word games.

Can the same word appear twice?▾

No. Each set is drawn without repeats, so every word in a batch is different. If you ask for more words than match your filters, you get every matching word once.

What's the difference between a noun, verb, adjective and adverb?▾

A noun names a person, place or thing (dog, castle). A verb is an action (jump, whisper). An adjective describes a noun (fluffy, ancient). An adverb describes how something is done (quickly, gently).

How many words can it pick from?▾

About 1,150 hand-picked common words across the four parts of speech, or roughly 170,000 words when you choose Whole dictionary.
