Frequently asked questions
How do you play Mastermind?▾
The game picks a secret sequence of colored pegs. You guess a full sequence and get feedback: a black peg for each color that's the right color in the right position, and a white peg for each color that's correct but in the wrong position. Use the clues to figure out the exact code within 10 guesses.
Is this Mastermind game free and does it need a download?▾
Yes, it's completely free, runs in your browser and needs no download, account or signup. Everything is generated and played locally on your device.
What do the black and white pegs mean?▾
A black peg means one of your guessed colors is the correct color in the correct position. A white peg means a color is somewhere in the code but you placed it in the wrong spot. The pegs don't tell you which specific position they refer to — that's part of the puzzle.
Can I change the difficulty?▾
Yes. Use more colors or more pegs for a harder code, fewer for an easier one, and toggle whether colors can repeat in the secret sequence. Your best (fewest-guesses) result is saved per difficulty setting.
