    How do you simplify a square root?▾

    Pull out the largest perfect-square factor: √72 = √(36 × 2) = 6√2. The same works for cube roots with perfect cubes: ∛54 = ∛(27 × 2) = 3∛2.

    What is the square root of a negative number?▾

    It isn't a real number. √−9 = 3i, where i is the imaginary unit (i² = −1). Odd roots of negatives are real: ∛−8 = −2.
