Frequently asked questions
How do you write a number in scientific notation?▾
Move the decimal point until one non-zero digit is left of it, then multiply by 10 to the number of places moved: 45,600 = 4.56 × 10⁴ and 0.000456 = 4.56 × 10⁻⁴.
What is E notation?▾
A calculator and programming form of scientific notation where 'e' means '× 10 to the power': 6.022e23 = 6.022 × 10²³.
What is engineering notation?▾
Like scientific notation, but the exponent is always a multiple of 3 so it matches SI prefixes: 45,600 = 45.6 × 10³ (45.6 k) and 0.000456 = 456 × 10⁻⁶ (456 µ).
Are trailing zeros kept?▾
Yes. Digits you type are kept exactly, so 0.000045600 becomes 4.5600 × 10⁻⁵ with 5 significant figures. Use the sig figs box to round.
