Frequently asked questions
How do you split rent fairly by room size?▾
Split part of the rent equally for the shared spaces such as the kitchen, living room and bathroom, then split the rest in proportion to each bedroom's size. A shared part of 30% to 50% is common.
How do you split rent by income?▾
Each roommate pays the same percentage of their income. Divide each person's income by the total income of everyone and multiply that share by the rent.
Should utilities be split by room size?▾
Usually not. Electricity, internet and water are used by everyone, so most roommates split utilities equally even when the rent itself is split by room size or income.
