Frequently asked questions
What is the 30% rule for rent?▾
The 30% rule says you should spend no more than 30% of your gross (pre-tax) monthly income on rent. On $60,000 a year that is $1,500 a month.
How do debts affect how much rent I can afford?▾
Lenders and many landlords look at debt-to-income. Keeping rent plus debt payments under 36% of gross income leaves room for savings and other costs.
What does 3 times the rent mean?▾
Many landlords require your gross monthly income to be at least three times the rent. To rent a $2,000 apartment you would need about $6,000 a month, or $72,000 a year.
