    Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate sales tax?▾

Multiply the price by the tax rate as a decimal. For a $100 item at 7.25%: 100 × 0.0725 = $7.25 tax, so the total is $107.25.

How do I remove sales tax from a total (reverse sales tax)?▾

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. With a total of $107.25 and 7.25% tax: 107.25 ÷ 1.0725 = $100.00 before tax. Do not just subtract 7.25% of the total — that gives the wrong answer.

How do I find the sales tax rate from a receipt?▾

Subtract the pre-tax price from the total, then divide by the pre-tax price. If you paid $108.25 for a $100 item, the rate is 8.25 ÷ 100 = 8.25%.

Why is there a state rate and a local rate?▾

In the US, the combined sales tax is the state rate plus county and city rates. Enter the state rate and your local rate and the calculator adds them together.

Does it work for VAT or GST?▾

Yes. VAT and GST work the same way — use Add tax for net prices and Remove tax to get the net amount from a VAT-inclusive price, e.g. 20% UK VAT: 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100.
