    How do I remove VAT from a price?▾

    Divide the gross price by 1 plus the VAT rate. For 20% VAT, 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100, so the VAT is 20. Taking 20% off 120 would wrongly give 96.

    How do I add VAT to a price?▾

    Multiply the net price by 1 plus the VAT rate. For 20% VAT, 100 × 1.2 = 120.

    What is the standard VAT rate in the UK and EU?▾

    The UK standard rate is 20%. EU rates range from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary; Germany uses 19%, France 20% and Spain 21%. Reduced rates apply to some goods.
