Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate the average price of a stock?▾
Multiply the shares of each purchase by its price, add these costs together and divide by the total number of shares. Buying 100 shares at 50 and 50 shares at 35 gives an average of 45.
How many shares do I need to buy to average down?▾
Use shares to buy = shares owned × (current average − target average) ÷ (target average − current price). The target must lie between your average and the current price.
Does this work for crypto and ETFs?▾
Yes. The average cost formula is the same for stocks, ETFs, funds and cryptocurrencies. Enter fractional amounts for coins and include fees in the price for an exact cost basis.
