    Frequently asked questions

How much do I need to retire?▾

Enough to fund your yearly spending for the whole retirement. This calculator adds up every inflation-adjusted withdrawal until your chosen age, discounted by the return you expect in retirement. A common rule of thumb is 25× your yearly spending (the 4% rule).

    What return should I use?▾

Long-run US stock returns have averaged about 10% a year before inflation; a balanced portfolio is often modeled at 5–7%. Use a lower return in retirement, when portfolios usually hold more bonds.

Why does inflation matter so much?▾

At 3% inflation prices double in about 24 years, so $60,000 of spending today needs roughly $146,000 a year in 30 years. The calculator grows your income need with inflation every year.

Does it include Social Security, pensions or taxes?▾

No. Subtract any pension or Social Security you expect from the yearly income you enter, and remember that withdrawals from 401(k)s and traditional IRAs are taxed.

How is the extra monthly saving calculated?▾

It's the fixed monthly amount that, invested at your pre-retirement return until you retire, fills the gap between your projected savings and the amount needed.
