Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my freelance hourly rate?▾
Add your target take-home income and business expenses, divide by (1 − tax rate) to get the revenue you need, then divide by your billable hours per year (billable hours per week × working weeks).
How many billable hours should a freelancer plan for?▾
Most freelancers bill 20–30 hours a week. The rest goes to admin, sales, invoicing and learning, so planning on 40 billable hours usually leads to undercharging.
Why add a profit buffer?▾
A buffer of 10–20% covers quiet months, late payments and client churn. It also gives you room to save for equipment and to grow the business.
