Frequently asked questions
How do I make pixel art?▾
Start small — 16×16 or 32×32 — and draw the outline with a dark color, then fill shapes with a few flat colors and add highlights and shadows one pixel at a time. Limited palettes (8–16 colors) give the classic retro look.
What size should pixel art be?▾
16×16 is classic for icons and small game sprites, 32×32 for characters with more detail, and 64×64 for larger scenes or portraits. Export with a larger scale (×8 or ×16) so it stays sharp when shared.
How do I keep pixel art sharp when it's scaled up?▾
Always enlarge by whole numbers with 'nearest neighbor' scaling — the Export size option does this for you, so each pixel becomes a crisp square instead of a blur.
Can I export with a transparent background?▾
Yes. Empty cells (shown as a checkerboard) are transparent in the PNG, perfect for game sprites, stickers and emotes. Tick White background if you need a solid background instead.
What does Mirror do?▾
It copies every pixel you draw to the opposite side horizontally, so faces, characters and objects come out perfectly symmetric in half the time.
What colors does the default palette use?▾
It's a 16-color palette inspired by the PICO-8 fantasy console, a popular choice for retro game art. Use the color picker to add any other color.
