How to use Long Division Calculator
- 1Enter the dividend (the number being divided) and the divisor (the number you divide by)
- 2Choose With remainder for a whole-number answer like 42 R 1, or Decimal answer to keep dividing past the decimal point
- 3Follow the written long division layout and the numbered steps: divide, multiply, subtract and bring down the next digit
Frequently asked questions
How do you do long division step by step?▾
Repeat four steps from left to right: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. For 295 ÷ 7: 7 goes into 29 four times (4 × 7 = 28, 29 − 28 = 1), bring down 5 to make 15; 7 goes into 15 twice (2 × 7 = 14, 15 − 14 = 1). Nothing is left to bring down, so 295 ÷ 7 = 42 R 1.
How do you write a remainder as a fraction or decimal?▾
Put the remainder over the divisor: 42 R 1 in 295 ÷ 7 is 42 1/7. For a decimal, keep dividing by adding zeros after the decimal point: 295 ÷ 7 = 42.142857142857…, where 142857 repeats forever.
How do you do long division with a decimal divisor?▾
Move the decimal point in the divisor to the right until it is a whole number, and move the dividend's point the same number of places. 12.5 ÷ 0.25 becomes 1250 ÷ 25, which is 50. The calculator shows this step automatically.
How do you know if a decimal repeats?▾
While dividing past the decimal point, watch the remainders. As soon as a remainder appears that you've had before, the digits from that point repeat. 1 ÷ 3 always leaves remainder 1, so 1/3 = 0.333… A fraction in lowest terms terminates only if the divisor has no prime factors other than 2 and 5.
How do I check a long division answer?▾
Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder; you should get the dividend back. For 295 ÷ 7 = 42 R 1: 42 × 7 + 1 = 294 + 1 = 295.
What are the dividend, divisor, quotient and remainder?▾
In 295 ÷ 7 = 42 R 1, 295 is the dividend (the number being divided), 7 is the divisor, 42 is the quotient (the answer) and 1 is the remainder (what's left over).
