Frequently asked questions
How is BAC calculated?▾
This calculator uses the Widmark formula: grams of alcohol divided by body weight times a body-water factor (0.68 for men, 0.55 for women), minus about 0.015% for every hour since you started drinking.
What is the legal BAC limit for driving?▾
It is 0.08% in the US, England and Wales, and 0.05% in Scotland and most of Europe. Commercial and young drivers often have lower limits. The only safe BAC for driving is zero.
How long does it take to sober up?▾
The body removes roughly 0.015% BAC per hour, about one standard drink an hour. Coffee, showers or food after drinking do not speed this up.
