    How to use Volume Calculator

    1. 1Choose a shape — cube, box, cylinder, sphere, cone, pyramid, prism, capsule, frustum or ellipsoid
    2. 2Enter its dimensions and the length unit (mm, cm, m, in, ft or yd)
    3. 3Read the volume, surface area and the equivalent in litres, gallons, cubic metres and cubic feet

    Frequently asked questions

    How do you calculate volume?▾

Multiply the dimensions using the shape's formula: a box is length × width × height, a cylinder is π × radius² × height, and a sphere is 4⁄3 × π × radius³. Keep all measurements in the same unit — the answer is in that unit cubed.

How do I convert cubic centimetres to litres?▾

    1 litre = 1,000 cm³, so divide cm³ by 1,000. A 10 × 10 × 10 cm box holds exactly 1 litre. 1 m³ = 1,000 litres.

How many gallons are in a cubic foot?▾

One cubic foot holds about 7.48 US gallons (28.32 litres). One US gallon is 231 cubic inches, or 3.785 litres; a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres.

How do I find the volume of a cylindrical tank?▾

    Measure the inside radius (half the diameter) and height, then V = π r² h. A tank 1 m across and 1.5 m tall holds π × 0.5² × 1.5 ≈ 1.178 m³, or 1,178 litres.

What's the difference between volume and surface area?▾

Volume is the space inside a shape (units³, like litres); surface area is the total area of its outside (units², like paint coverage).

How do I measure an irregular object?▾

Split it into simple shapes and add their volumes, or submerge it in water and measure how much the water level rises (1 ml of water displaced = 1 cm³).
