Frequently asked questions
How much paint do I need for a 12×14 room?▾
With 8 ft walls, one door and two windows there are about 366 ft² of wall. Two coats at 350 ft² per gallon need about 2.1 gallons, so buy 3 gallons (or a 5-gallon bucket if you're also doing other rooms).
How much does a gallon of paint cover?▾
Most interior paints cover 350–400 ft² per gallon per coat on smooth, primed walls (about 10 m² per liter). Textured or porous surfaces soak up more.
How many coats of paint do I need?▾
Two coats is standard for an even finish. One coat can work when repainting the same color; dark-to-light changes or fresh drywall may need primer plus two coats.
How is the wall area calculated?▾
Perimeter × wall height = 2 × (length + width) × height, minus about 20 ft² per door and 15 ft² per window. The ceiling adds length × width.
