Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how much carpet I need?▾
Multiply the room length by its width to get the area, add about 10% for seams and trimming, then divide square feet by 9 to get square yards. A 12 x 15 ft room needs about 22 square yards.
How wide is a roll of carpet?▾
Most carpet in the US comes in 12 ft wide rolls, sometimes 13.5 or 15 ft. In Europe and the UK common widths are 4 m and 5 m. Pick a width that covers the room in as few strips as possible.
How much extra carpet should I buy?▾
Add 5% to 10% for a simple rectangular room and 15% or more for rooms with angles, closets or patterned carpet that has to be matched at the seams.
