Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how many tiles I need?▾
Divide the area by the area of one tile plus its grout joint, round up, then add a waste allowance. A 12 × 10 ft floor with 12-inch tiles and 1/8-inch grout needs about 118 tiles, or 130 with 10% waste.
How much extra tile should I buy?▾
Buy 10% extra for straight layouts and 15% or more for diagonal, herringbone or rooms with many corners. Keeping a few spare tiles also helps with future repairs.
Does grout width change the number of tiles?▾
Slightly. Wider grout joints mean each tile covers a bit more area, so you need fewer tiles. The effect is larger with small tiles such as mosaics.
