Frequently asked questions
What are the basic Roman numerals?▾
I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1000. A smaller numeral before a larger one is subtracted: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, CM = 900.
What is 2026 in Roman numerals?▾
MMXXVI: MM (2000) + XX (20) + VI (6).
How do I write a date in Roman numerals for a tattoo?▾
Convert the day, month and year separately and join them with dots or dashes. For example 14 February 2024 is XIV · II · MMXXIV (day-month-year) or II · XIV · MMXXIV in US order. Double-check the result before it's inked.
Why is IIII or IC rejected?▾
The converter checks the standard form: a symbol repeats at most three times and only I, X and C are used for subtraction (IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, CM). It then tells you the correct numeral — 4 is IV and 99 is XCIX.
How are numbers above 3,999 written?▾
With a vinculum: a line over a numeral multiplies it by 1,000, so V̅ = 5,000 and M̅ = 1,000,000. This converter supports up to 3,999,999.
Is there a Roman numeral for zero?▾
No. The Romans had no numeral for zero, and there are no negative or fractional Roman numerals in standard use.
