Frequently asked questions
How is time and a half calculated?▾
Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5 to get the overtime rate, then multiply by the overtime hours. At $20/hour, 8 overtime hours pay 8 × $30 = $240.
When does overtime start?▾
Under the US FLSA, non-exempt employees earn overtime after 40 hours in a workweek. Some states such as California also pay overtime after 8 hours in a day.
Is overtime pay taxed differently?▾
Overtime is taxed as ordinary income. It may look like more tax is withheld because a larger paycheck is temporarily placed in a higher withholding bracket.
