Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between debt snowball and avalanche?▾
Both pay the minimum on every debt and put all extra money on one target. Avalanche targets the highest interest rate first, which costs the least interest. Snowball targets the smallest balance first, giving quick wins that keep many people motivated.
Which method saves the most money?▾
Avalanche always costs the same or less interest, because the most expensive debt shrinks first. The difference is often small, so pick the method you'll stick with — the results show both.
What happens when a debt is paid off?▾
Its minimum payment rolls over to the next target debt. Your total monthly payment stays the same, which is what makes both methods speed up over time.
How is interest calculated?▾
Each month the balance grows by APR ÷ 12 before payments. A $4,500 card at 22.9% APR accrues about $86 of interest in the first month.
Why does it say my debt will never be paid off?▾
If the payments are smaller than the monthly interest, the balance keeps growing. Increase the minimum or extra payment until it covers the interest.
