Frequently asked questions
How is credit card interest calculated?▾
Card issuers charge your APR divided by 12 each month on the balance. At 22% APR that is about 1.83% a month, so a 5,000 balance adds roughly 92 in interest in the first month.
Why does paying the minimum take so long?▾
Minimum payments are mostly interest plus about 1% of the balance, so the balance shrinks very slowly. Paying a fixed amount above the minimum can cut years and thousands in interest.
What if my payment is too low?▾
If your monthly payment is less than or equal to the monthly interest, the balance never goes down. The calculator warns you when that happens.
