Frequently asked questions
How is inflation calculated?▾
The amount is multiplied by the ratio of the Consumer Price Index in the end year to the CPI in the start year. For example, CPI was 172.2 in 2000 and 313.7 in 2024, so $100 in 2000 equals about $182 in 2024.
What CPI data does this calculator use?▾
It uses the annual average US CPI-U (all urban consumers) published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics for 1950 through 2024.
What is a normal inflation rate?▾
The US Federal Reserve targets about 2% a year. The long-run US average since 1950 is roughly 3.5% a year.
