    Frequently asked questions

How does image to ASCII art work?▾

The picture is shrunk to a grid — one cell per character — and each cell's brightness is matched to a character with similar 'ink': dense characters like @ and # for dark areas, light ones like . and : for bright areas, and spaces for white.

Which images make the best ASCII art?▾

Simple subjects with strong contrast — portraits against a plain background, logos, silhouettes and animals. Raise the contrast slider for flat photos, and use more width for detail.

Why does my ASCII art look stretched?▾

Text characters are about twice as tall as they are wide, so the tool uses half as many rows to keep proportions. It must be viewed in a monospace font (like Courier or Consolas) — proportional fonts will distort it.

How do I use ASCII art in Discord, Reddit or code?▾

Wrap it in a code block (three backticks before and after) so the platform uses a monospace font and keeps the spacing. Narrower art (40–80 characters) fits chat windows best.

    What does Invert do?▾

It swaps light and dark characters so the art looks right as light text on a dark background, such as a terminal or dark-mode chat.

    Are my images uploaded?▾

No. The conversion happens in your browser, and your image never leaves your device.
