    Frequently asked questions

    What does a negative exponent mean?▾

    It's the reciprocal: a⁻ⁿ = 1 / aⁿ. So 10⁻³ = 1/1000 = 0.001 and 2⁻⁴ = 1/16.

    What is a fractional exponent?▾

    A root: a^(1/n) is the nth root and a^(m/n) is the nth root raised to the m. 27^(1/3) = 3 and 8^(2/3) = 4.

    Why is anything to the power of 0 equal to 1?▾

    Because aⁿ ÷ aⁿ = a⁰ and anything divided by itself is 1 (for a ≠ 0). 0⁰ is conventionally taken as 1 in most calculators.

    How big is 2 to the power of 100?▾

    2¹⁰⁰ = 1,267,650,600,228,229,401,496,703,205,376 — 31 digits. Whole-number powers are computed exactly, digit for digit.
