    Frequently asked questions

What is the best distance to sit from a TV?▾

It depends on screen size and how immersive you want it. As a rule of thumb, sit about 1.0-1.3x the screen diagonal away for an immersive 4K/8K setup, or up to 1.7x the diagonal for the more relaxed SMPTE reference angle.

How is the recommended viewing distance calculated?▾

The calculator uses the screen width (from the diagonal and aspect ratio) and a target horizontal viewing angle (30 degrees SMPTE, 36 degrees THX, 40 degrees immersive), then solves distance = width / (2 x tan(angle / 2)).

What TV size should I buy for my room?▾

Switch to 'I have a distance, find TV size', enter how far your couch is from the wall, and the tool gives you a recommended diagonal range across the three viewing-angle presets.

Does aspect ratio change the result?▾

Yes. At the same diagonal size, a 21:9 ultrawide screen is wider than a 16:9 TV, and a 4:3 screen is narrower, so the recommended distance changes even though the diagonal is the same.
