    Frequently asked questions

Which barcode type should I use?▾

Use Code 128 for internal labels, shipping, inventory and asset tags — it encodes letters, numbers and symbols. Use EAN-13 (worldwide) or UPC-A (US/Canada) for products sold in retail stores.

How is the EAN-13 check digit calculated?▾

Multiply the first 12 digits alternately by 1 and 3, add them up, and the check digit is the amount needed to reach the next multiple of 10. For 590123412345 the sum is 83, so the check digit is 7.

Can I use these barcodes on products I sell in stores?▾

The barcodes are valid and scannable, but retailers require numbers from a GS1-registered company prefix. Get your numbers from GS1, then generate the barcode images here.

PNG or SVG — which should I download?▾

SVG is a vector file that stays sharp at any size and is best for print and label software. PNG is exported at 3× resolution for documents, spreadsheets and websites.

    Why won't my barcode scan?▾

Keep dark bars on a light background, leave blank space on both sides, don't stretch it unevenly and print it large enough — at least about 1 inch (2.5 cm) tall and with 2px or wider bars on screen.
