Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between UUID v4 and v7?▾
v4 is 122 bits of randomness. v7 (RFC 9562) starts with a millisecond Unix timestamp followed by random bits, so v7 IDs sort by creation time — much better for database primary keys and indexes.
Is a UUID the same as a GUID?▾
Yes. GUID is Microsoft's name for the same 128-bit identifier. Windows tools often show GUIDs in uppercase and wrapped in braces, which you can enable here.
Can two generated UUIDs collide?▾
Practically never. With 122 random bits you would need to generate about 2.7 quintillion v4 UUIDs to reach a 50% chance of a single duplicate.
Are these UUIDs secure?▾
They are generated with crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographically secure random generator, and are never sent to a server. Still, don't use UUIDs as secrets or passwords.
