Frequently asked questions
How do I test left and right speakers?▾
Choose ◀ Left or Right ▶ and press Play. The tone should come only from that side. If it comes from the wrong side, your headphones or speaker cables are swapped.
What frequencies can humans hear?▾
Roughly 20 Hz to 20 kHz for young people. The upper limit drops with age — most adults hear up to about 15–17 kHz. Use the sweep to find where the sound fades for you.
What is 440 Hz?▾
440 Hz is the note A above middle C (A4), the international tuning standard for musical instruments.
What is the difference between sine, square, triangle and sawtooth waves?▾
A sine wave is a pure tone. Square and sawtooth waves add many harmonics and sound buzzy; a triangle wave is in between. Sine is best for hearing and speaker tests.
Is it safe?▾
Start at low volume, especially with headphones and very high or very low frequencies, and stop if anything is uncomfortable.
