Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between JSON and YAML?▾
They store the same data (objects, arrays, strings, numbers, booleans, null). JSON uses braces, brackets and quotes; YAML uses indentation and is easier to read, which is why it's used for Docker Compose, Kubernetes and CI config files.
Why are some strings quoted in the YAML output?▾
Values like "yes", "no", "on", "null", "1.0" or "08:30" would be read as booleans, null, numbers or times by some YAML parsers. The converter quotes them so they stay strings everywhere.
Does it support YAML anchors and merge keys?▾
Yes. Anchors (&name), aliases (*name) and merge keys (<<: *base) are expanded into plain JSON, so the output contains the full values.
Why does 'on' stay a string instead of true?▾
The converter follows YAML 1.2, where only true and false are booleans. Old YAML 1.1 parsers turn yes/no/on/off into booleans — the classic GitHub Actions 'on:' surprise.
What happens to comments?▾
JSON has no comments, so YAML comments are dropped when converting to JSON.
Is my data uploaded?▾
No. Parsing and conversion run in your browser, so config files, secrets and API responses never leave your device.
