Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the gas cost of a trip?▾
Divide the distance by your fuel economy to get the fuel needed, then multiply by the price. A 300-mile trip at 28 MPG uses 10.7 gallons; at 3.50 per gallon that is 37.50.
How do I calculate my MPG?▾
Fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive, then fill up again. Divide the miles driven by the gallons needed to refill. Switch to 'Fuel economy (MPG)' and enter both numbers.
How do I convert L/100 km to MPG?▾
US MPG = 235.215 ÷ (L/100 km). For example 7 L/100 km ≈ 33.6 MPG (US) or 40.4 MPG (UK). The calculator accepts either unit and shows all of them.
Why are US and UK MPG different?▾
A UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 liters versus 3.785 liters for a US gallon, so the same car shows about 20% higher MPG in UK figures.
