    Frequently asked questions

How do I put a list in alphabetical order?▾

Paste the list into the box with one item per line (commas or spaces also work). It is sorted A to Z instantly; press Copy sorted list to paste it back into Word, Google Docs, Excel or an email.

How do you alphabetize names by last name?▾

Tick Sort names by last name. “John Smith”, “Ann Brown” and “Zed Adams” become Zed Adams, Ann Brown, John Smith, because the last word of each name is used as the sort key while the names stay as written.

Do you ignore “The” when alphabetizing titles?▾

Library and style-guide rules usually skip leading articles, so “The Great Gatsby” is filed under G. Tick Ignore “the”, “a”, “an” to sort book, film and band names that way.

Why does item 10 come before item 2?▾

Plain text sorting compares character by character, and “1” comes before “2”. Natural number sorting (on by default) reads whole numbers, so item 2 comes before item 10. Untick it for strict character order.

Are uppercase and lowercase sorted separately?▾

No. By default sorting ignores case, so apple and Apple sit together like in a dictionary. Tick Case sensitive to place capitals first (A, a, B, b) and to treat Apple and apple as different when removing duplicates.

Can I remove duplicates while sorting?▾

Yes. Tick Remove duplicates and repeated items are dropped, keeping the first one. The counter shows how many duplicates were removed.
